  1. What if the premise is wrong? What if there's no such division between heart and mind. "I've always known the quality of love is the mind" said Helen Loomis. So, why does Scobie feel responsible for Louise' happiness? Just his deep religious convictions.
Indeed, in the first book we learn that louise is devastated after knowing scobie hadnt been promoted. That prevented her from flying to South Africa. So focused on her desires is she that she doesn't realize Scobie is a tormented soul.
The sentence "no heart can understand another" is True for her. But what about him?.Scobie seems to understand her. That's why he thinks Wilson will alleviate her... And his suffering. However, maybe he is too obsessed with carrying out his duties...
So, excessive individualism, self interest or pride led them (us) to miss a full connection of the minds...they couldn't or they didn't want to keep the flame.
