  1. .... O, Connor was said to be a devout Catholic. Maybe. But what seems clear is that the author is interested in the spiritual... Something that Hulga lacks. Philosophy is her artificial leg... absolutely useless when she is confronted with the despicable salesman. Both characters are cynical (they walk lopsided...). However, the shrewdness of the guy turns out to be the "suitable" tool to survive amo ng "good Country People"
